Getting through grief.... the loss of a family pet

It's me Toby!

Yup, a dog with a blog!

I once heard that animals don't live as long as humans cuz the work we have to do on the planet (being man's best friend, changing the world with luv and unconditionally accepting people) is important work...but work that takes a lot of our energy. So... we are here for a while and make a difference....then we gather over the rainbow bridge to play.

Dealing with the loss of a pet is difficult.

For many children, the first loss they deal with is their pet.

Experiences are like footprints in our future....

How you handle it helps shape how kids deal with loss in their future.

Mom and her radio guest Margot talk about this on PAWsitive Radio.

Here's a few tips to help your family cope with an aging pet, or pet loss...

1) Journal or write a letter to your dog
2) Talk about it
3) Allow yourself to feel and experience grief
4) Surround yourself with a support system
5) Children can draw pictures of their pet

Listen to the conversation....Mom and Margo talk about more tips on PAWsitive Radio -

We would love you to share your tips on coping with grief.  Please feel free to comment on this blog, or on our Facebook Page (make sure you "like" us too)

Check out my books....

This book teaches children about kindness, acceptance and respect, and how to prevent bullying.   You can find out more here and check out what other parents, teachers and kids had to say about the book.

1) Hide toys under snow, then when the snow melts it is like Christmas time... toys everywhere...

Found my long lost frisbee when the snow melted.  Love spring cleaning the yard!

The Fascinating Science of Animal Intelligence, emotions and Friendship

Animals are great teachers of kindness, acceptance and respect.

Guest, Dr. Marc Bekoff is renowned for making the rapidly changing science and policy around animal intelligence and emotions accessible for a mass audience.

He is professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He has worked alongside leading writers and activists including Jane Goodall, Peter Singer, and PETA cofounder Ingrid Newkirk.

His new book Why Dogs Hump and Bees Get Depressed is filled with amazing stories about the empathy, grief, and love we can observe in both wild and domestic animals.

Marc talked about animals impact humans through their ability to be non judgmental,  which he describes as being different from unconditional. Marc explained that dogs can be a great judge of character, when they show hesitance, Marc pays attention.  Marc has studied animals around the world, including their rituals and habits, and how they communicate with each other and with humans. His work has helped people understand how to co-exist peacefully based on what animals teach us about this. If people were to apply the 3 P's: positive, passion, and polite, the impact globally would be quite impressive.

What lessons have animals taught you?

Hammond launched PAWsitive Radio show over 1 ½ years  ago and has never looked back.  “The show is a powerful way to connect the animal stories and lessons to our personal and professional lives. In fact, our dog Toby taught me so much about how to show up as my best version of myself, that I also wrote several books about him, and, weave these stories into the presentations and training programs on resilience and bully prevention. PAWsitive Radio is another way of sharing these stories, and, connect experts in the animal world to families with pets. The show helps me fulfill Team Toby’s mission of improving lives by teaching kindness, acceptance and respect.”

Eternal Answers for Animal Lovers" was the result.  The second edition came out in 2012.

Guest  Marilyn Dickie, author of With Hope They Waited, which shares the story of rescue at Mile 26. He lived in the bush along the railroad tracks, north of Cochrane Ontario, where the only access was by train. The names and contact information of a few of the rescues involved, and a Facebook page were given out where the public could find out what they could do to help. On that day, their lives took another turn and have never been the same.

Guest Jeanne E Sexson will be talking about her website Stop Chasing Your Own Tail- our dogs, our friends, our teachers. She has found this gratifying to note how the quality of her life has been enhanced by the lessons they have taught, and continue to teach, her.  As a sculptor, she created the Best Friends Collection – small sculptures capturing those irresistible moments of joy when we allow ourselves to simply live in the moment and feel the unconditional love of our furry buddies.

Charmaine Hammond, host of PAWsitive Radio show is a professional speaker and has interviewed more than 300 guests on her shows. She is a Blog Talk Radio featured host, and her show PAWsitive Radio also airs on Dog Works Radio channel.

Puppies Behind Bars - a gift to two

The holiday season is upon us and many people will exchange presents and celebrate festivities.  At the Puppies Behind Bars organization, puppies are giving the gift of joy, service and compassion all through the year.

Carl Rotans joined me on PAWsitive Radio. Carl is the senior instructor for Puppies Behind Bars (PBB), a non-profit organization that trains prison inmates to raise, train and care for puppies that will become service dogs for the disabled and explosive detection canines for law enforcement.

Mr. Rotans took his love and passion for his own Labrador Retrievers, and began his career in dog obedience training. This lead to his employment at a nationally renowned guide dog school located in the New York metropolitan area. It was here that he worked and received formal training and eventually took an instructor position with PBB.

Now as the Senior Instructor his duties include the training and instruction of new staff as well as opening and preliminary instruction for the program in new correctional facilities.
Founded in 1997 by Gloria Gilbert Stoga, PBB has become a world leader in prison dog raising programs and operates in correctional facilities in three states. The quality of the dogs produced is second to none, but equally important is the effect the program has on the inmates who care for the dogs. The puppies live in prison with their ‘puppy raisers’ from age eight weeks until eighteen months. As the puppies mature into well-loved, well-behaved dogs their raisers learn what it means to contribute to society rather than take from it.

Carl stated that the puppies enter the jail when they are eight months old, and are trained by inmates who have been carefully assessed and trained themselves to take the puppies through a two year program, training them to be service dogs. These puppies are nurtured, trained, and loved by inmates who undergo specialized training.  The program is a beautiful example of the many ways that dogs can impact and change lives. The inmates who are part of this program spend 24 hours a day with the puppies in training, and contribute to society and to a veteran who will need a service dog to improve their quality of life.

You can listen to some beautiful stories of the different puppies behind bars and how this program is changing lives on the inside and outside of the bars.

Healing our animals...

Belinda is an re-connective healing expert and works with animals not to treat symptoms, but to treat the whole animal. Belinda mentioned that many animals actually mirror their guardian’s illness and disease.

Researching and studying the ancient Hawaiian healing practices has been a passion of Belinda’s and about 15 years ago, this impacted her life in a very positive way. We talked about the power of re-connective healing, and what is so incredible is that the healer does not actually physically touch the animal. The healing occurs by being present and using deep empathy and helping the animal to get into an extremely calm state. Belinda talked about some incredible examples of animals who in 1-3 sessions, experienced dramatic improvements in their health. This form of healing can also reduce anxiety and depression in animals, and is extremely beneficial for animals who have experienced trauma .

Imagine if all animals had this sense of joy and peace...

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all shelter animals had the opportunity to experience this type of transformational healing?

Guide Dogs, Service Dogs, and Dogs that Make a Difference!

What an delight to talk with Holly McKnight.  Holly is the President of the Arlington Texas Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind as well as is involved with Guide Dogs for the Blind and Lone Star Puppy Raisers. Holly was born with the back third of her brain outside of her skull… the part of the brain that normally controls vision. Due to this, Holly was able to train with her first guide dog to assist her with everyday living when she was starting college. Her current guide dog, her third, is Pollyann. Holly will share lots of information on the show today about guide dogs… their training, their life, qualifications to be matched with one, types of dogs used, etc. Holly also got to sing at Carnegie Hall- what a thrill that would have been.

Holly talked about the various ways that dogs help individuals, for example guide dogs.  The training process for guide dogs is ongoing, and the benefits and sense of freedom they provide to their human companion is incredible. Holly described this as increasing her mobility!  Her dog Polyaan is a Yellow Lab, and is a great support to her. One element that is so very important is trust. Holly talked about the trust the builds between the dog and his/her owner.

Our dog Toby was not a guide or service dog, but he was an animal assisted therapy dog and I can attest to the incredible trust that Holly talked about. The more Toby and I volunteered together, the more I trusted him, and he trusted me. As well, this trust rippled over to the patients.

These organizations are such an important part of our community, and make a big difference in the lives of others.

When Toby and I would travel north America sharing his story, we would often talk with children about how we became Toby’s forever family. This often opened up a dialogue about pet adoption, we got to hear so many heartwarming stories. I am really enjoying hosting my own pet related radio show PAWsitive Radio! It was our dog Toby, the star of my books On Toby’s Terms, and Toby The Pet therapy Dog, that inspired me to keep the conversations going.

My recent guest Craig Haverstick met in California at a Pet Expo. His dog Stanley could have passed for Toby’s brother. Toby and Stanley had the chance to play and surf together at Dog Beach in Del Mar California, and it was Craig who taught Toby how to surf.

Toby's first surf board lesson- Craig got Toby surfing in no time at all!

Craig spent 20 years in the Navy traveling the world. He now works as an environmental specialist at various military bases. He became involved with dogs after adopting Stanley, his first dog since childhood. He never dreamed that having a dog could be such a wild adventure. Craig volunteers as a foster home with the Chesapeake Bay Retriever Relief and Rescue (http://www.cbrrescue.org/default.asp). Since Stanley entered his life he has been involved with 2 Rose Parades, featured on the Outdoor Channel TV series "Logs & Dogs DockDogs World Championships for 2 years (with a world champion Chesapeake named Henry), inducted into the DockDogs Hall of Fame (2010), and many other numerous adventures. Stanley's rescue story can be found at:

http://www.bakersfieldcalifornian.com/local/x437101149/A-dogs-tale-From-local-shelter-to-Rose-Parade

Having Craig on my PAWSitive radio show was great, we chatted about some very important topics:

  • Animal rescue and adoption- ways to make your pet a forever member of your family or as Craig said “a lifelong family member”
  • Know the Breed before you adopt
  • Responsible pet ownership- reach out and ask for help (e.g. with behavior issues)
  • Find ways for your family to support local pet organizations and rescues (e.g. donations, volunteer walkers, etc.)
  • The importance of pets having a job. Our Toby volunteered as a Pet Assisted Therapy dog at a local hospital, it had a profound (positive) effect on his behavior and gave Toby and I a purpose together.
