Changing the world one dog bed at a time

Toby the dog here.

Yes.... I am a dog on a mission!

My humans and I are on a mission to build a kinder Canada one paw, one person at a time!  It's called PAWS Across Canada.

We meet the most PAWmazing people on our tour.

I'd like you to meet my new friend.  Maizie!

She is a 12 year old grade 8 student on a big mission.  She is changing the world through dog beds! I just LOVE LOVE LOVE what she is doing to change the world!

Here I am on the dog bed Maizie made.  Since we left Martensville SK, the bed and I have traveled to Saskatoon, Brandon and Winnipeg.  Have dog bed.....will travel!

These beds are made with LOVE!

When Maizie was in grade 7, a local girl from her school was accepting donations for a nonprofit animal rescue group. Maizie  had made  a few dog beds for family members the decided to give dog beds as a donation.   This decision was a 4 PAWS UP success!

Maizie carefully chooses the fabrics for the dog beds.

You can see how I love the beds and settle right down on them.  I could hardly keep my eyes open, they are so comfy you just want to relax.

Maizie then started Doggy Naps, and she committed to donating part of the dog bed sale profits to the materials she needed to make beds for homeless dogs in rescues and shelters. For every three beds she sells, she donates one to a shelter or rescue.  Maizie has already donated 151 beds!!

Her beds are made with love and she does this purely to help provide dogs with comfort while they wait for their “forever”family.

Everyone in her family plays an important role in Doggy Naps. Even her friends and classmates have helped with this mission.   Mom interviewed her principal and it was clear that he was proud of how Maizie is making a difference in the world and learning incredible entrepreneurial skills.

A dog labelled as "unadoptable" becomes therapy dog and star of her book

Peek-a-boo!

It's me Toby

Yup!

A dog with a blog!

Mom meets the most pawsome people and pets on our PAWsitive Radio show.

She just interviewed Peachy the dog's mom.

Gabriela Duran is the author of the book Peachy the Warrior Princess.

Peachy was a dog that Gabriela adopted, and who had survived living in a puppy mill. With great care, patience and love, Gabriela and her family helped Peachy overcome the trauma of living in a puppy mill.  Gabriela was told in the beginning that Peachy was not adoptable.  Perhaps Peachy had other plans including proving the doubters wrong.  Peachy overcame her fears, and became a therapy dog that helped many people.  She also became the inspiration behind Gabriela's mission of preventing puppy mills and educating people about responsible loving pet care.

How can you help Gabriela with Peachy's legacy and prevent puppy mills?

To learn more and hear Peachy's story, please listen to pawsitive radio here:

Animal Shelter Fundraising

Animal Shelters require the support of volunteers, services and products in kind, donations, sponsorship and funding to provide a much needed and life saving service in communities.  Securing funds and sponsorship can be a challenge. Tim Crum of Animal Shelter Fundraising  joined us on PAWsitive Radio-All things Pets! to talk about tips for animal shelters and rescue organizations to successfully raise funds.
Tim Crum- Animal Shelter Fundraising.

Tim stated that one of the growing trends is the number of shelters that are working on new buildings.
On the radio show Tim spoke about the importance of understanding sponsor etiquette and the set of requirements that sponsors have. Shelters that are building or remodeling their building to be more like a community and retail  venue are further ahead.  Some shelters have a retail store where they sell books, pet supplies, and gifts for animal lovers. Many also have a coffee shop or snack kiosk on site.  The shelters that create the images that they are a hub of resources and connection are further ahead, and, have a better likelihood of attracting corporate donors and sponsors.

Tim suggested that one of the keys to corporate sponsorship success is to create an experience for the sponsor, the donor and visitors to the shelter. The other key is relationships.

Fundraising is less about money and more about people and relationships. Tim reminded listeners that People adopt. People volunteer. People donate.  Make sure you manage this well.

One tip for shelters and rescues is that every week, have board members call donors simply to share a story how their contribution made a difference and to say thank you.  Don’t ask for more money or longer commitment, just have a conversation and focus on the relationship.  Animalshelterfundraising.com and animalshelterservices.com
