Yapple Pie- a holiday treat your dog will love (and so will the humans)

Toby the dog here!

Yuppers

Dog with Blog

Today mom interviewed a Pet Chef!  I want one at my house

No offence to mom and dad...

They are great pet parents.....

But.

Can you imagine as a dog having your own chef to make you cool treats?

Lisa Hennessy started Your Pet Chef shared her love of making home cooked meals for her four legged family members with others. When her rough collie, Shelby, was diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy their vet asked if Lisa would be willing to prepare special foods for Shelby that had been designed by a leading vet researcher on this disease. of course Lisa said yes then started cooking.  The recipe had stuff like tofu, spinach, peppers.  Lisa said the smelled like dirt
but not to Shelby... she gobbled it up like crazy!  Now Lisa has several books and is designing healthy pet treat recipes!

Check out the pawsome recipe for yapple pie that Lisa shared on Mom's PAWSitive Radio Show:

You can find more of Lisa's yummy recipes for us four legged family members here

Order a copy of Lisa's book to share with your pet loving friends and family! There are pawsome recipes in there that your dog will get all goobery over. :)

Maybe you need to get some cool shaped dog biscuit shaped cookie cutters?

Travelling with your pets... preparing for anything that could happen on the adventure!

A few words from my office... the computer of Toby!

Hey! There's a monkey on my keyboard!

One of mom and dad's highlights during the Fort McMurray leg of the tour was hearing Chris Hadfield's presentation.
Mom's big highlight was when Chris said "prepare for what could go wrong!"

Meanwhile she had been super sick for the first week of the tour. She lost her voice. Felt awful. And finally.... went to the clinic (thanks Chris Hadfield for the nudge!)

Good news.... no pneumonia.

One of the things that can get in the way of a pet friendly adventure is the pets or humans getting sick.  Mom went to the medi-centre and saw the doctor and is finally better.

We have a PAWSome First Aid Kit, from Sunny Dog Inc. which we LUV!

Our partners at Petland Canada gave some great tips about traveling with pets during summer and warmer months:

- frequent water and stretch breaks (for us pets and for our human family members)
- don't leave pets in the vehicle, see Petland's No Hot Pets campaign
- keep consistent routines for your pet when traveling
- start off with shorter trips

And I have a Rein Coat to wear not only in the rain, but also if I get anxious....

So like Mr Hadfield says... "prepare for what could go wrong" when you travel with your pets.

Check out my tour videos at http://www.youtube.com/user/TeamTobyTv or our website at www.theoriginalteamtoby.com

Big thanks to our PAWSome partners:

Need help paying bills? Toby the dog has a solution.

I love helping my pet parents.

Mom taught me how to open the mail!

www.TheOriginalTeamToby.com
Actually she taught me to open the mail. I added my own style of ripping it up once opened.

Not sure what to do with it now.

Us pets have pretty simple solutions to everyday problems.

why buy a shredder when your dog can help you out?

Note from Toby's mom..... "now I just have to make sure he learns the difference between junk mail, bills and mail we want to keep."  :)

The Daily Rounds of Molly the Hound

What does your dog get up to when you are not looking?

What are the habits and routines your dog follows?

Toby has some interesting ones.  Before he lies down on his mat he circles five or six times to ensure he lands exactly in the right place.  And, when he catches his kong...he runs back to the place the kong first landed (almost as if he is checking to make sure he got it all).

Ed Payne shared a wonderful story about his dog Molly who is the star of his book,The Daily Rounds of a Hound.
www.dailyroundsofahound.com

Ed said the inspiration to write the book came from Molly, their adopted dog who shortly after bringing her home from the shelter, gave birth to nine pups.  He and his wife went from one dog to ten dogs in a few short weeks.  A loving FURever home was found for each pup, and Molly became the heartbeat at Ed's feet, giving him much to wonder about as she would sneak off on a secret mission.

Will my pet insurance cover my pet if THIS happens?

This is a question that Laura Bennett and her team at Embrace Pet Insurance respond to every day.

Laura stated that understanding your policy, what it cover (AND what it doesn't) is important in ensuring the best for your pet.  Many families who adopted a pet with an unknown health history worry they won't be able to access health insurance for their pet. Laura suggested that families carefully check out the plans available to them. Embrace insurance does cover these situations, and use the recent health examine to help determine the pet's health history.

Laura Bennett is the CEO and Co-Founder of Embrace Pet Insurance Laura developed the actuarial models behind the leading edge customizable pet insurance product, allowing the pet parent to choose her own product features to suit her own budget.

Pet insurance has saved lives. There are many cases of pets that have faced severe health issues and in many cases without the insurance, the family would not have been able to afford the necessary treatment.
Pet insurance can provide pets with the care they need, and peace of mind for the pet family.

Laura developed the actuarial models behind the leading edge customizable pet insurance product, allowing the pet parent to choose her own product features to suit her own budget.

Pet insurance can help cover the cost of vet bills and vet visits. Laura explained that it is important that pet families research different plans and find the plan best suited to their situation and the pet. Laura cautioned that  many plans do not cover hereditary or breed specific health issues, however, Embrace's plans are different, they cover this. As well, Embrace pet insurance has placed high priority on the overall wellness of their clients pet family members and provide a wellness benefit to cover some of the routine health and wellness costs, and, they give clients a reduction  in the deductible if the insurance hasn't been used. The www.petinsurancereview.com website features many reviews of happy clients who have accessed this plan.

Laura provided some great tips for families researching pet insurance:
- explore if the policy covers chronic conditions
- check if the plan and policy covers breed specific health issues
- ask how the benefit is paid (the benefit schedule)

The Fascinating Science of Animal Intelligence, emotions and Friendship

Animals are great teachers of kindness, acceptance and respect.

Guest, Dr. Marc Bekoff is renowned for making the rapidly changing science and policy around animal intelligence and emotions accessible for a mass audience.

He is professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He has worked alongside leading writers and activists including Jane Goodall, Peter Singer, and PETA cofounder Ingrid Newkirk.

His new book Why Dogs Hump and Bees Get Depressed is filled with amazing stories about the empathy, grief, and love we can observe in both wild and domestic animals.

Marc talked about animals impact humans through their ability to be non judgmental,  which he describes as being different from unconditional. Marc explained that dogs can be a great judge of character, when they show hesitance, Marc pays attention.  Marc has studied animals around the world, including their rituals and habits, and how they communicate with each other and with humans. His work has helped people understand how to co-exist peacefully based on what animals teach us about this. If people were to apply the 3 P's: positive, passion, and polite, the impact globally would be quite impressive.

What lessons have animals taught you?

You can listen to the interview with Marc Bekoff at:

Wise Words about Bully Prevention from an 8 Year Old Author

Smile.

Cheer someone up if they are feeling down.

Listen to people.

These were three PAWsitive tips that Hannah, age 8, shared on PAWsitive Radio during Bully Prevention Week!

Not only did Hannah offer great advice about how to reduce bullying, be a good friend, and, create more kindness in the world, she is an author! That's right. The Loving Tree is Hannah's newly released book and is available at  http://www.seanliv.com/_/Hannah_Rose.html .

We also had the opportunity to speak with Sean, Hannah's mom, who shared some sage advice for families. Sean reminded listeners of the importance of modelling unconditional love and acceptance, having family meetings to keep the lines of communication open, and, to do a family report card!  What a spectacular idea.

You can listen to the conversation with Hannah and Sean on PAWsitive Radio

Until next time,,,, let's be kind to one another!

Max A Pooch- Black Dog Gone Green

Toby the Dog here... welcome to my PAWsitive Blog! Here's the latest news from mom and I and our PAWsitive Radio Show:
Me...Toby the Dog and mom, Charmaine Hammond hosts of PAWsitive Radio!

Mom and I interviewed Keith Sanderson, Founder and President of Max A Pooch.

Max a Pooch the recycling dog and Keith.

Max A Pooch is one awesome dog!  Keith, his pet dad, has trained him to recycle! I want to learn that. He knows the difference between litter and recyclables, and can even go find Keiths' slippers and sunglasses.  Way to go Max for helping our world get a little greener! Four Paws up from us.

Mom and Keith also talked about how Max A Pooch got his name, this is quite the story... you really must listen to Keith tell this story:   http://www.blogtalkradio.com/teamtoby/2013/10/23/max-a-pooch-and-bully-prevention-lessons-from-dogs

I Loved the part where Keith and mom talked about how us animals are great teachers for you humans and how dogs need a purpose too.  Keith is an advocate for animals, he is helping save animals by writing articles, sharing his corporate world experience with non profits, and, sharing information about the great services like rescues, shelters, and more.  Keith also is bringing some of the animal protection and welfare cases to the public. The more people that know about some of the animal mistreatment that goes on, the more we can work together to make a kind, respectful and accepting world.  Max A Pooch is doing a PAWsome job... let's help him out!

Until next blog... let's be kind to one another.
